Betancuria and Its Breathtaking Rural National Parque

Betancuria and Its Breathtaking Rural National Parque

Betancuria in Fuerteventura is a small town that has everything you need, from the tastiest pasteleria (cake shop) to Aloe Vera stop offs where you can have a browse around for free and take part in some tasting and learn some skin knowledge whilst using Aloe.

Away from the small town, you head out and through Tiscamanita and straight through Pajara. It takes roughly around 30 minutes from Antigua on the FV30, which I'm sure you won't mind as the scenery is beautiful.

The incline up to the national Parque is 1300 metres, with huge slabs on the side of the road, preventing you from driving over. Its very bendy, so be patient. In 1994 the viewpoint became a Rural Park.

If like me heights give you sweaty palms, don't look down!!

Once you get to the top there is a good sized parking area and a plaque with information on the Parque. Even though it isn't a massive walking area, it is very steep with built up rock where you can sit for hours with a flask and just your thoughts.

You can literally see for miles and miles, you have views of a few volcanoes and the valley down below, so get that camera ready you're not going to want to miss those piccies on a clear day.

Whilst your sat gazing at the view you will find some native birds if your lucky enough such as the majorero vulture (Neophron percnopterus majorensis), the tit (Parus caeruleus degener) and the canary (Serinus canaria), and other migratory birds such as the marbled teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris) and the Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea). It's basically a bird watchers paradise.

Birds are not all you will find whilst falling for the views, you will be accompanied by many Chipmunks. Don't be afraid of them they are sweet but very fast, it does say not to feed them although many people feed them sunflower seeds.

We love the whole experience, the drive up the mountain and the stunning views once were there. It's so peaceful although you may hear a few goats in the distance yelling to each other.

I say, get comfy on a rock with a few snacks and a drink and let your day go by with no cares in the world!
